Emily Agnes was born March 12, 1930 to Wencel and Emma Bruha of rural Comstock, an area known to her children as "the Bohemian Alps". While growing up on the farm Emily participated in threshing, running the binder, herding the cows, milking and any other farm chores that needed to be done. One of her favorite stories to tell was about her dad running her over with the car when she was a young girl - he thought she was a hog! When Emily turned 21 she moved to Broken Bow, where she met the love of her life, Paul Jacobsen, while working at the Varney Rexall Drug store. On April 20, 1952 they were married at National Hall, west of Ord. God blessed this union with five children, LeAnn, Barbara, Ronald, John and Lori. Their first home was in Gates before spending a couple of years in Oregon. They returned to the Gates area but eventually moved to Merna in 1963, first living in town before moving to the west edge where Paul still resides. Emily spent most of her married life making a loving home for her family; after seeing her last child off to school, she began working at Montgomery Ward in Broken Bow. Emily was a natural hostess and wonderful cook whose house was a gathering place for family and friends, many of whom were the lucky recipients of her wonderful cinnamon twists and homemade rolls. A favorite hobby was crocheting doilies and she loved attending the Knit Wits. One neighbor described her as a gentle, sweet, and kind woman with a rich sense of humor.
Emily was a woman who dearly loved her husband, children and grandchildren. Those left to honor her memory include children, LeAnn (Dougg) Custer of Colorado Springs, CO, son-in-law Jim (Selma) Bull of Phoenix, AZ, Ron (Judy) Jacobsen of Merna, John (Janet) Jacobsen and Lori (Paul IV) Utemark, all of Geneva; grandchildren, Katrina Custer, Andreas (Jennifer) Custer, Scottland (Fiona) Custer, Jeffrey (Ashley) Bull, Jamie Bull, Diron (Amy) Jacobsen, Roni Marie Jacobsen, Bobbi Ann (Jared) Pettit, Jenny Jacobsen, Katie Jacobsen, Brindi (Joe) Streufert and Derek Utemark; great granddaughters, Kyla and Adilynn Jacobsen, Olivia Custer, Emmi Pettit, Eleanor Custer; and siblings, sister-in-law, Evelyn Pauline Bruha (Wencel’s wife) of Grand Island, Frank (and Amelia) Bruha of Scotia, Evelyn (LaVern) Osentowski of Ord, Alice (Norman) Woitalewicz of Loup City, Katherine (Ronald) Server of Excelsior Springs, MO, Edward (Jean) Bruha of rural Comstock, Emanuel (Sandy) Bruha of Burwell, Larry (Ione) Bruha of Loup City and Gary (Eileen) Bruha of Ord. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Albert and Wencel Jr., daughter Barbara JoAnn Bull, and grandson, Jonathan James Jacobsen.
