Broken Bow, NE- Lorraine Still age 94 of Broken Bow died Sunday February 13, 2011 at the Custer Care Center #1 in Broken Bow.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday February 16, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Govier Bros Mortuary in Broken Bow with Dr. Marsha (Engle) Middleton officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Govier Bros. Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be held Tuesday 8 Am to 8 PM with the family greeting friends 6 PM to 8 PM at Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Lorraine Engle Still was born March 6, 1916 at home in Beeville, TX to Charles Stuart Engle and Nancy Mozella Ellis Engle. And passed away February 13, 2011 in Broken Bow, NE.
Her father was a commercial beekeeper and moved the bees from Texas to the northern states every year. Her parents, grandfather and two other couples founded the Sioux Honey Association when she was a child. She remembers them meeting in her home around a table on Sunday afternoons.
Lorraine was a graduate of North Dakota State University with a major in home economics and a minor in art. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and was recently awarded a 75 year membership certificate in her sorority. .
She met her late husband Willard Aloyius Still while flying kites with her brother when she was twelve year old. He was the boy next door.
Lorraine and Willard were married on June 30, 1938 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. They were married seventy-one years. Willard majored in entomology at North Dakota State University and joined the family bee business. They had three children Nancy Juanita, Wanda Lynne and Richard Charles.
They moved the bees and family from Minnesota to Beeville, Texas in 1948 and then to Broken Bow, NE in 1953 which has been their home ever since.
In 1954 Lorraine started the Broken Bow school lunch program. Six months later she was asked to take the position of Custer County Home Extension Agent for the University of Nebraska. When she retired in 1983 there were fifty extension clubs in Custer County. She had the rank of Full Professor with the University of Nebraska.
She was president of the Nebraska Home Extension Association in 1960. Later she received the National Extension Distinguished Service Award,
She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Order of Eastern Star, PEO Chapter S and Arrow Artists. Lorraine always admired the arts and started art clubs wherever she lived including Arrow Artists in Broken Bow. Her paintings are in many homes and offices.
Lorraine and the late Tom Talbot were the two organizers of the Autumn Art Workshop at the 4-H Camp in the Nebraska National Forest at Halsey. NE. The Art Workshop is still in existence today.
Lorraine and Willard thoroughly enjoyed their three children, seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. They made many happy memories camping with their children and grandchildren.
She had a full, happy life and was in her home until her husband’s death October 15th, 2009. She then moved to Custer Care Assisted Living.
She was preceded in death by her husband Willard and son, Richard Charles Still Sr.; parents; two brothers, Francis Madison Engle, Charles Stuart Engle Jr. and sister Elizabeth Engle Thayer.
She is survived by daughters Nancy Juanita (Francis) Hircock of Ansley and Wanda Lynne (William) Melville of Broken Bow, daughter in law Joann Lucille Still of Anselmo, Surviving grandchildren are Francis Lee (Mary Kay) Hircock and children Ryan Charles, Stuart Allan and Tanner Lee of Ansley; Sally Lynne (Roger) Schuett of Chapman; David William Melville of Portland OR; Andrew Still (Amy) Melville and children Anna Kristine, Aaron Still and Abigail Katherine of Omaha; Richard Charles Jr. (Brenda) Still and children Rebecca Lea and Marshall Jerry all of Oconto; Ann Lucille Conley and children Ethan Michael, McKayla Ann and Haley Jo of Kerns, TX and Douglass Stuart Still of Cheyenne, WY. She is also survived by her niece the Rev. Dr. Marsha Engle Middleton of Dallas, TX and sister-in-laws Jennifer Engle of Wolfe City, TX and Barbara Engle, of Rockwall. TX and brother-in-laws Robert Thayer and wife Phyllis of Virginia Beach, VA and Marshall Richard Still and wife Lolly of Petaluma CA, .
