Jean Butterfield

Jean Louise (Tyler) Butterfield was born at Valentine Nebraska to John Howard and Daisy Mae (Mark) Tyler on April 17, 1926; she was the 2nd of four children. When Jean was 2 years old the family moved to the Antelope Ranch near Valentine. At age 4 the family moved to Saint Frances, South Dakota near the Rosebud Reservation where her father had bought three quarters of land. Jean started school in Saint Frances at the Meadow Valley School where she attended Kindergarten-2nd grades during 1931-1932. The family lost the land at Saint Frances during the Great Depression. The family moved to Valentine Nebraska in 1932. Jean spent the rest of her school years in Valentine, graduating from Valentine High School in 1944. On June 7, 1944 Jean was united in marriage to William B. Pearson and to this union 4 children were born (Barbara Jean, Constance Joanne, William Benjamin Jr., and Mark Tyler). Bill and Jean lived on the Pearson Ranch near Valentine until they bought a ranch and moved to Broken Bow in December of 1962. They lived on the Sunny Slope Ranch south of Broken Bow for 5 years then moved to town. While in Broken Bow, Jean enjoyed working for Roy Holcomb at Holcomb Drug and for The Laron Wrights at Bow Agency. Bill Sr. and Jean divorced in 1975. Jean attended Hastings College from 1975-1976 majoring in Hotel/Motel Management. On August 20, 1977, Jean married Edwin Edward Butterfield; they resided in Merna Nebraska where Jean was a secretary from 1977-1980 at the Anselmo-Merna High School and Ed was the Custer County Weed Superintendent. During this time Jean was very active in Does and acted as a president twice. She was also Worthy Matron of Eastern Star. Jean and Ed moved to Arizona in 1983 and returned to Nebraska when Ed went blind in February of 1987. They lived in Lincoln until Ed's death in June of 1992. Jean then moved to her son Mark's ranch outside of Gibbon Nebraska where she resided with her cat, Pumpkin, until she entered into Assisted Living in Kearney. Jean moved to the Golden Living Center in Broken Bow where she died October 12, 2011. Jean's joy was her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She loved to do counter cross-stitching and to grow flowers. Jean came to know the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at a very young age. Her faith in the Lord was a very important part of her life. She leaves behind to mourn, her children Barbie (Gary) McCormick of Sparks Nebraska, Conni (John) Grieser of Broken Bow, Bill (Cindy) Pearson of Broken Bow, Mark Pearson (Fiancee' Linda Johnson) of Gibbon, 14 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, sister Helen Kennedy, brother John (Ramona) Tyler, brother-in-law Dale Vose, sisters and brother-in-law Georgia Bellville and Emogene and George Sullivan, many nephews, nieces, and friends. Jean was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Ed Butterfield, granddaughter Patricia Renee Mostek, sister Doris Parks, brothers-in-law Lynn Parks, Duane Kennedy and Lowell Bellville, and sister-in-law Shirley Vose. Funeral services for Jean Butterfield will be held at 2:00 p.m. October 15, 2011 at Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow with Wayne Belville and John Grieser officiating. Interment will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Patty Mostek Memorial Fund.
