Hubert Tarleton – epic storyteller, quick-witted humorist, and purveyor of ideas – passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on Nov. 3, 2011 in Lincoln while surrounded by his four children. He was born July 27, 1917 and adopted by parents, James and Matilda Tarleton. He grew up on a farm near Walworth, Nebraska, attending elementary school there and high school at Gates and Milburn. He was a frequent medal winner in track and field and loved participating in sports. For several years, he played on neighborhood baseball and softball teams. Hubert entered the U.S. Navy in March, 1942 and served aboard the USS Cabot aircraft carrier and battleships as a pharmacist mate first class in the hospital corp. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Armada in 1944 and experienced the infamous Halsey’s typhoon aboard ship while heading toward Japan. He also served a year on the island of Attu in the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska. He met his future bride, Irene Hatch, at a dance in Broken Bow, and they were married in July of 1942. After his discharge in 1945, Hubert and Irene moved back to the farm near Walworth and farmed and ranched there until retiring and moving to Sargent in 1975. In Sargent, he worked for the irrigation district during the summer months. He and Irene spent winters in Arizona. He was a member of the Sargent United Methodist Church, served on church boards, school boards, ASCS, American Legion, the irrigation district board and other organizations. For the past six years, Hubert lived in Lincoln near his family and enjoyed the friendships he made while living in The Legacy retirement community. Hubert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 61 years, Irene; a sister, Ruth Coplin, and an infant daughter, Nancy. He is survived by daughters: Marcia and Larry Link of Lincoln, Janice and Richard Buroughs of Gretna; and sons: Gary and Susan Tarleton of Charles Town, WV, and Thomas Tarleton of Santa Barbara, CA; as well as 3 grandchildren, their spouses and 7 great-grandchildren.
