Broken Bow, NE- William C. Doty age 83 of Broken Bow died Sunday December 4, 2011 at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Funeral services will be held on Friday December 9, 2011 at 10:30 AM in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Broken Bow with Father Jim Hunt officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors. Govier Bros. Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be held on Thursday December 8th, 8 AM to 8 PM. A wake service will be held on Thursday evening at 7 PM at Govier Bros. Mortuary with Father Jim Hunt officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Broken Bow Booster Club or the Jennie Melham Medical Center Foundation.
William C. Doty was born April11, 1928 to Royal and Mabel (Plummer) Doty in North Platte. He started school in Cozad, NE. In 1934 his family moved to Broken Bow, NE where he graduated in 1946. After graduation Bill joined the Navy. He served aboard the USS LCI 615 in the South Pacific and participated in the “Scientific Resurvey of the Atomic bomb test on Bikini Island” He was honorably discharged in 1948.
After leaving the service, Bill attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
On June 12, 1950 Bill and Mary Mecke were united in marriage at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Ogallala, NE. To this marriage were born four children. Mark and Julie were born in Ogallala, the family later moved to Broken Bow where Pat and Scott were born.
In 1954 Bill went into the meat processing business with his father. In 1967 he sold his interest in the business to his brother Jack. He purchased a liquor store and operated it until 1976. Following the sale of the liquor store he purchased the Olson Department Store. He and Mary operated the Doty Department Store until 1993. At that time Bill received his real estate license. He worked as an agent for Dave Davis Realty. When the business was sold to Farmers National Company, Bill remained an active licensee until 2006. He continued to serve as a volunteer
at Farmers National, assisting with various office duties.
Bill was a past president of the Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce. He served as a member and President of the Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center board of trustees. He was a member of the Broken Bow Volunteer Fire Department and was president elect of the Nebraska Processors Association.
Bill is survived by his sons Mark (Susan) Doty of Lexington, Patrick (Linda) Doty of Broken Bow, and Scott (Lori) Doty of Fremont, son-in-law Dr. R. Bruce Koefoot of Grand Island, special friend Betty Knoell of Broken Bow, seven grandchildren Erin Doty of Lexington, Alison (Jeremiah) Baker, John Sullivan ( special friend Abby) , Ryan (Jen) Doty, Kristin Doty all of Lincoln, NE. Jessica (Chris) O’Fallon, Tim Koefoot all of Knoxville, TN. and 5 great grandchildren Carlin and Audry Baker, Camden and Madelyn O’Fallon, and Grayson Doty, sisters-in-laws Judy Doty of Decora, IA, and Jacque (Buck) Bassett of Ogallala.
