Charlene Rhoades

November 3, 1932 — February 25, 2012

Charlene H. Glause Rhoades was born on November 3, 1932, and went to her final rest on February 25, 2012. She was born to Paul and Genevieve Glause at Halsey, NE. She married Claude E. Rhoades at Brewster, NE on June 10, 1951. Together they raised four children and ranched in the central Sandhills area for the last 60 years. She will be remembered for her devotion to family, her amazing work ethic, and as someone who was always ready to extend a helping hand to others. In her early adulthood she was a schoolteacher at various small country schools in the Sandhills. She was employed by Mid-Nebraska Individual Services for 30 plus years. Charlene was dedicated to protecting the rights of the disabled. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Lois Jensen, sister Mahala Thompson, sister Judy Gushard, one grandchild, Kailey Epp and one foster daughter Joanne Van Cleave. She is survived by her husband Claude Rhoades, daughter Karla Rhoades Estes, son Greg Rhoades, daughter Julie , daughter Lisa Rhoades Barrett, eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, five step great-grandchildren, three brothers, Jap(Paul), Rolly and Van Glause, two sisters, Margaret Campbell and Linda Haumont, and a nephew, Steven Campbell that lived with Mom and Dad for a number of years. A private celebration of her life will be held at the time of her inurnment in the Victoria Creek Cemetery near their ranch, a place that she found restful. The following verse is excerpted from a prayer that hung on the wall of her kitchen for many years. Lord, thank you for the things I love, open spaces, the big skies above. The workday is hard, the hours long, highlighted by a meadowlark's song. Make me a good partner and a friend, one on whom my husband depends.
