Tommy Merle Fred, 57, Merna, Nebraska, passed away April 3, 2012. Tommy was born on September 16, 1954 at Broken Bow, NE to Alvie and I. Dee Fred. He lived his first year of life on the Upstream Ranch moving in succession from the Nicklos Ranch and finally to the Lazy J – C Charolais ranch where he currently lived on north of Callaway, NE. Tommy attended Homeward Trails Bible camp in 1964 and God convicted him of His need for a Savior. He gave his life to Jesus Christ at that camp and committed his life to following His Lord and it changed his life forever. He and his mother, Dee, were baptized in the Middle Loup River with a believer’s baptism shortly thereafter. Tommy became a member of the Gideon’s following his father’s death in 1974. He attended Cliff Union church, and later Broken Bow Berean church. Tommy began school at District 151 Sunshine one -room schoolhouse. and later moved to Anselmo-Merna High playing football and basketball and graduating from there in May 1972. From there he attended North Platte Community College graduating in May 1974 with a degree in Building Construction. After graduation Tommy took over the ranch after his father’s death. Tommy was active in several organizations. Among them the National Charolais Association, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association, and the Broken Bow One Box Gun Club. Tommy is survived by his mother, I. Dee Fred (Story), sister, Penny Dee Douglas (husband Fred), Aunt Irene Clark, Aunt Dianna Fred, niece Jessica L. Mucci (husband Jerad), great niece Anastasia Mucci, nephews Ian Douglas, Robert Douglas, Nathaniel Douglas and numerous cousins and friends. Tommy was preceded in death by his father Alvie Fred, paternal grandparents Jim and Mamie Fred, and maternal grandparents Omer and Nellie Story. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday April 10th at 2:00 PM at the Berean Church in Broken Bow with Reverend Larry DeMoss officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Govier Bros. Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be held on Monday 8 AM to 8 PM at Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow with the family greeting friends 6 PM to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers family requests memorials be given to ministries designated by the family.
