Broken Bow, NE – Charles Giles age 89 of Broken Bow, died Tuesday April 16, 2013 at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday April 19, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with Rev. Todd Karges officiating. Interment will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or the Custer County Foundation.
Mr. Giles was born February 2, 1924 at Elsmere, NE. to Charles M. and Astrid (Stav) Giles. Immediate survivors include his wife Ina Jean (Blauhorn) Giles, children Dr. Gene and Jane Giles of Alliance, NE. Randall Giles of San Diego, CA. Sally Giles of Denver, CO, grandsons Dr. Nicholas and Michelle Giles of Lincoln, NE., Lucas Giles of Lincoln, NE. Zachary Eskridge of San Francisco, CA, great grandchildren Kaitlyn Giles and twins Karter and Khloe Giles of Lincoln, NE, sister Ruth Sullivan of Broken Bow and brother Joe Giles of Ainsworth, NE.
Charles was raised on a ranch near Elsmere, NE. and attended District 101C until the eighth grade and graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1940. He then worked at Purdum, NE store until joining the U.S. Navy in April 1943, taking boot camp training at Farragut, Idaho followed by serving aboard the USS Conner, a destroyer in the South Pacific. After his discharge as Yeoman First Class in 1946, Mr. Giles attended the Grand Island Business College, graduating from Advanced Accounting and Business Administration. He then worked for Western Union as a relief manager for two years, traveling Nebraska, Iowa, South and North Dakota.
Mr. Giles was united in marriage to Ina Jean Blauhorn of Palmer, NE. on March 12, 1950 after which they made their home in Broken Bow. He went to work for the Custer County Chief for three years and then went to work for the Nebraska State Bank and Trust Company. He was a graduate of the Colorado School of Banking at Boulder, CO., and also the Nebraska Bankers Trust School. Mr. Giles retired from the bank as president and continued on the Board of Directors as Chairman until his death.
Mr. Giles was a member of the United Methodist Church, serving on several boards including three terms on the Broken Bow School Board and three terms as treasurer of the Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Elks. He enjoyed bowling, golf, men’s coffee, music, and spending many hours playing the piano and organ.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Jimmy Ray, a brother George Giles, sister Bonnie (Giles) Keys and daughter in law Marcy (Kiesel) Giles.
