Lincoln, NE- Lila (Taylor) Jenkins Picton, age 72, of Ashland, formerly of Grand Island, died Friday August 9, 2013 after a battle with cancer at the Bryan LGH West Hospital in Lincoln. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday August 14, 2013 at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with Reverend Todd Karges officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Govier Bros. Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM at Govier Bros. Mortuary with the family greeting friends 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A memorial has been designated to the Lila Picton Memorial Fund. Lila Ann Taylor was born on December 13, 1940 at Broken Bow, Nebraska to Milburn and Lera (Gibson) Taylor. Lila graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1958. Lila moved to Lincoln, NE and worked at the Lincoln newspaper where she met her husband, Charles “Chuck” Jenkins. On October 21, 1961 they were married Marysville, KS. They lived in California for a few years before moving back to Broken Bow. Lila worked at the Custer County Weed District and Nursing Home Builders. Two children were born to this union; Corey and Suzanne. The family moved to Grand Island in 1974 where there family grew by two adopted daughters; Chris and Lori. Charles died on December 28, 1985. Lila worked for Chief Automotive in Grand Island until she retired. On May 19, 1988 Lila was married to Ray Slater where they made their home at Doniphan, NE. Lila began her serving in ministry in 2002 and attended St. Paul’s School of Theology in Kansas City. She graduated and served as a Pastor for the United Methodist Churches in Mullen and Tryon from 2002 to 2007 and at Chambers and Amelia 2010 to 2011. On September 24, 2004 Lila married Owen Picton. They made their home in Ashland, NE in 2007. In her spare time she truly enjoyed sewing, quilting, reading, cooking for many and any who would try her new recipe, gardening, singing, decorating and traveling with Owen and families. She was active with Walk to Emmaus and loved helping the United Methodist Women and their many projects. She also went on many mission trips with the church. Lila is survived by her husband Owen Picton of Ashland, NE; son Corey (Sarah) Jenkins of Valentine; daughter Suzanne Eickhoff of Lincoln, NE; one granddaughter Kirsten Eickhoff of Lincoln; adopted daughters Chris Jenkins Valasek of Lubbock, TX; and Lori Sergeant of Washington; step daughter Teresa (Casey) McGrew of Lubbock, TX; step grandchildren Scott McGrew and his daughter Catherine McGrew also from Lubbock; and Trevor (Becky) McGrew of Katy, TX; step children David and Cindy Picton, and their children, Martha, Kathryn, Paul of Blair, NE; Stephen and Kelly Picton, and their children, Zachary, Anna of Brookfield, IL; brothers Loren (Charlene) Taylor; Duane (Gayle) Taylor; Dick (Jodene) Taylor; Rex (Sheryl) Taylor; Kent (Cindy) Taylor all of Broken Bow; and sister Lola (Gene) Chapin also of Broken Bow. Lila was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Chuck Jenkins, and step son Mike Jenkins.
