Broken Bow, NE- Virgil “Bud” Ohmberger, age 90 of Broken Bow, formerly of the Sargent and Ainsworth area, died Tuesday August 27, 2013 at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Funeral services will be held on Friday August 30, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with Reverend Todd Karges officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be at 2:00 PM at the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Sargent, NE. Visitation will be held on Thursday 11:00 AM to 8 PM with the family greeting friends 6 PM to 7 PM at Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow. Memorials have been established to the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Sargent.
Virgil “Bud” F. Ohmberger was born August 17, 1923 to Fred D. and Edna Mae (Slagle) Ohmberger at Walworth. Bud grew up in the Sargent area. He went to school at West Union and Milburn.
Bud left home to join the CCC Camp at Mitchell, NE. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corp in December of 1941, and served until November of 1945. Bud was married to Margrette Kelshaw on April 10, 1943. Three children were born to this union; Fred, Millicent, and James.
Bud worked for the Sargent Co-op many years before moving to Ainswoth in 1966, where he managed the Co-op there. In 1998 Bud and Margrette moved to Broken Bow. Margrette passed away in 2003.
In 2005, Bud met and married Lou (Hale-Matusek) in 2005. Lou passed away in 2007. He met and married Irene (Olson-White) in August of 2008.
Bud belonged to the Sargent American Legion, and was past commander. He also belonged to the VFW and volunteer fire department. After moving to Ainsworth he became active there in the same organizations.
Bud is survived by his wife, Irene of Broken Bow, sons Fred (Sharon Walker) Ohmberger of Burwell, and James (Pat) Ohmberger of Lincoln, his daughter; Millicent (Rick) Orvis of Lincoln, 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, two sisters Hazel Gruber of Minden, Dorothy Moravec of Burwell, and Irene’s children; Tammy (Ernie) Kleeb of Broken Bow, Fred (Phyllis) Duryea, of Valentine, Ne, and Ed (Patty) Duryea of Merna, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Margrette, two sisters Helen and Luella, two infant brothers, and one granddaughter Julie Orvis.
