Jean Shears

January 18, 1924 — August 13, 2014

Jean Shears, age 90, of Broken Bow, Ne. died Wednesday August 13, 2014 at the St. John’s Good Samaritan Center in Kearney, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held Saturday August 16th at 10:30 a.m. at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow, Nebraska with Stanley Morrison and Julie Harthorn officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Hillcrest Cemetery at Thedford, Ne. Visitation will be Friday August 15 at Govier Brothers 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A memorial will be decided on at a later date. Cornelia Jean (Florea) Shears was born January 18, 1924 at their home south of Thedford to Claude A and Mary E. (Adkins) Florea. She walked 2 ½ miles to country school through the 8 grade and graduated from Thedford High School. Jean taught school north of Mullen (Phipps Giles) where she met her husband Vernon Paul Shears, he worked as a ranch hand where she boarded. They were married February 28, 1942. Jean taught Marie School the fall of 1942 and taught school between Whitman and Hyannis 1943-1944. Their first child, Marion Dorothy was born at Mullen, and their second child Laverna Jean was born at Mullen. The family moved to Thedford in September of 1945 to the Arthur Adkins place and lived there for 14 years. Nellie Rose was born at Thedford and Claude Aaron was born at Valentine. Jerry Lee and Tammy Louise were born in Broken Bow. Mrs. Shears is survived by her daughters; Marion Dorothy (Jon) Holmes of Miller, Laverna Jean (Ted) Trotter of Broken Bow, Nellie Owen of Brule, NE, and Tammy Louise Shears of Brighton, CO, her sons; Claude Arron Shears of Broken Bow, and Jerry Lee (Natalie) Shears of Alda, NE, four sisters; Rose (Lester) Miles of Plainview, NE, Hazel Smith of Thedford, NE, Mary Ann Mintle of Thedford, NE, and Laura (Richard) Rameriz of Loveland, CO, 16 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Vern, son in law Duane Owen Sr., two brothers; Donald and George, a sister Naomi Della, two sisters in laws Elsie Florea and Wilma Florea, two brothers in laws James Mintle and Arvid Smtih.
