Dona Martin

Dona V. Martin was born on April 20, 1924 to John and Bessie Culp Harrold at Alexandria, NE. She went to be with her Lord on November 27, 2014 at the age of 90 years, 7 months and 7 days. Dona worked side by side with her father on the farm until after her graduation in 1942 from High School at Merna, NE. She then moved to Broken Bow where she worked at the City Café. It was there she met Leonard “Soapy” Martin. They were married in Fremont, NE on October 6, 1946, and lived in Fremont until Soapy graduated from Auto Body School and they moved back to Broken Bow to make their home. Dona also worked at the Elementary Schools as an aide for 6 years, Ace Hardware for 13 years and was the Cook at the Prairie Pioneer Center for 7 years. They were blessed with 2 children, Steven Harrold and Susan Lynnette. And she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever she could. Dona’s greatest passion was cooking. She loved to cook for family and friends, and also she loved to manage the kitchen in her church. The First Baptist Church was a very important part of her life and she held many offices through the years, sometimes going beyond her call of duty to see them through times when they had no minister. Dona enjoyed making many beautiful quilts, sewing, and also many other crafts, too. She loved her garden and flower garden and she loved to read books. After their Retirement, Dona and Soapy loved to travel taking several great trips. Camping, fishing and rodeos were also among their many passions. Preceding her in death are her Parents, sister Marylou, husband Soapy and their son, Steven. She leaves to mourn her, daughter Susan, grandchildren Shane McIntosh, Jenny George, August Nelson and Maia Nelson. Also 9 great-grandchildren, 6 sisters, Delma Wilson Keystone, NE, Lucille Wood, Litchfield, NE, Ruth Fagan Anselmo, NE, Glee Alberding Tucson, AZ, Jane Elliott, Ft Collins, CO and Carrol Woodard, Julesburg, CO, and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Memorial funeral services will be held Saturday December 6th, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the First Baptist Church in Broken Bow with Rev. Jurdan Counts officiating. Inurnment will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery. A Memory book may be signed at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow Friday December 5th 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. A memorial will be selected at a later date.
