Broken Bow, NE- Verla Ruth Shafer age 78 of Broken Bow died Friday March 20, 2015 at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday April 4, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow with Reverend Mary Jane Gockley officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery. A register book may be signed at Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow. Memorials are suggested to BD Picnic Fund.
Verla Ruth Shafer was born on October 13, 1936 at Oconto, NE to Earle and Alice (Hipsher) Landreth. She attended school in Oconto and graduated from Oconto High School in 1954. She was married to Ivan Shafer on June 1, 1952. Two children were born to this union: Regina and Julie. The couple later divorced. Verla started working at the Becton Dickinson factory in Broken Bow in 1961 and retired in 1998.
Verla enjoyed bowling, ceramics, gambling, traveling, horse races, yard sales, playing cards and dancing.
Verla is survived by daughters; Julie (Alan) Shaw of Lincoln, and Regina Shafer of El Paso, TX, one grandson Jonathan (Cassie) Shaw of London England, and a granddaughter Nicola Shaw of Eastbourne England. She is also survived by her sister Dorothy Wackerla of Broken Bow and other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, ex-husband Ivan, and a nephew Richard Wackerla.
