Broken Bow, NE – J. Stanley Martin, age 87 of rural Broken Bow died Monday April 20, 2015 at the Quality Senior Village in Broken Bow.
Funeral services will be held on Friday April 24, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with Pastor John Carney and Pastor Doug Saner officiating. Burial will be in the Custer Center Cemetery near Broken Bow. Visitation will be held on Thursday 8 AM to 8 PM at Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow. Memorials have been established to Gideon’s Bibles or the Church of God in Broken Bow.
Stanley was born on February 22, 1928 in Oconto, NE to Perry and Sarah (Hatch) Martin. He graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1945. After graduation, he attended University of Nebraska at Lincoln for one year, where he studied education. He also ran the 2-mile and was part of the cross-country 4-mile relay team. In the fall of 1946, he started his 23-year teaching career, which consisted of local country schools and in the Broken Bow Public School System. Stanley eventually received his Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 1967.
Stanley married Virginia Elaine Phillips on December 24, 1948 and to this union five children were born. In the spring of 1949 they started faming around the Broken Bow area. They made their home out on the farm until the Spring of 2014, when they moved into town.
Stanley was preceded in death by his parents; twin infant brothers; daughter Angelia Martin; son-in-law Jerry Sittler; granddaughter, Stephanie Martin; brother Dean Martin and half sister Pauline Cooper.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Broken Bow; Daughters: Sherry Sittler of Broken Bow, Eugenia (Steve) Wright of Olathe, KS and Sons: Bob(Charlene) Martin of Broken Bow, and Jeff (Beth) Martin of Palm Bay, FL. He was blessed with 12 grandchildren: Jennifer (Albert) Kendrick, Jason (Jennifer) Sittler, Lindsey Sittler, LeAnne (Jason) Kaiser, and Daniel Sittler, Amanda (Adam) White, Jeremy (Tara) Wright, Patrick (Elissa) Martin, Brian Martin, Paige (Tom) Yockey, Broderick (Heather) Martin, and McCall Martin, and 8 great-grandchildren: Jerry and Rylee Sittler, Sophia and Olivia White, Felicity, Lana , Cailyn Wright, Lucy and future baby Martin. He is survived by siblings, Opal Govier of Washington, Marilyn Coons of California, Glenda Davidson of Hastings, NE, and Perry Martin of Washington in addition to a host of extended family.
