Frances Faye Govier, 88, passed away June 1, 2015, at the St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island. She had been living at the Good Samaritan Village in Grand Island prior to her death.
She was born August 30, 1926, at her family farm in Rose Valley, Custer County, Nebraska. She was one of a set of triplets. She attended rural school in Rose Valley through 10th grade. Frances graduated as salutatorian from the Broken Bow High School with a scholarship to the Grand Island Business College. Frances continued her studies at A&M College in Fort Collins, Colorado, and joined the Tri-Delta Sorority while there.
Frances married Glen A. Govier on December 24, 1946. They moved to the family farm near Weissert, NE, and later moved to a farm north of Broken Bow. The couple was married for 66 years until Glen’s death in 2013. There were five children born to this union.
Frances came from a family of storytellers. They shared great humor among themselves and others. That sense of humor and a humble beginning were the foundations of Frances’ kind heart.
Frances proved to be a hard worker on her family farm. She worked from early morning until night and still provided a hot meal for her family. Frances enjoyed checking the fence in the far pastures, hauling a lumber wagon by tractor in the early days, and if saw a musk thistle, she fervently dug it out of the ground. Frances always enjoyed raising chickens and having a large vegetable garden. She was active in the Tappen Valley Ladies Club and enjoyed visiting with neighbors. Frances used her business talents to keep the books for the farm while it grew. She was also a seamstress. Not only did she mend the jeans of her menfolk, but she also made her daughter Joyce’s wedding dress.
In her free time, Frances enjoyed jigsaw, crossword, or word search puzzles. Frances always supported her children in education, sports or other pursuits. In her later days, Frances especially enjoyed visits from her grandchildren and the antics of her five great-grandchildren.
Surviving Frances are two sisters: Eugenia Vannice of Lincoln, and Florence Pichler, of Adrian, MI; five children: Joyce Magee (Wayland) of Bennington, Steve (Sonja Sullivan) of Grand Island, Frank Govier (Debbie Joy) of Sargent, Bruce Govier (Pamela Hogenson) of Omaha, and Dan Govier (and friend, Deb Smith) of Grand Island; nine grandchildren: Meagan Magee of San Antonio, TX, Wayland Magee (Traci) of Agency, MO, Patrick (Carmen) Govier of Holdrege, Lisa Govier of Centennial, CO, Logan (Becky) Govier of Broken Bow, Clay Govier (and friend, Crystal Hurt) of Broken Bow, Andrew (April) Govier of Bennington, Anna Sandall (Colin) of Overland Park, KS, and Arena Govier of Dakota Dunns, SD; and five great-grandchildren: Caleb Govier of Holdrege, Mason, Mallory, and Braxton Govier of Broken Bow, and Ameila Magee of Agency, MO.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Louisa (Weinman) Farmer, four brothers, Jim, George, Ted, and Garland, three sisters, Gwyneth, Fern, and Virginia, and husband, Glen.
Frances will be remembered as a loving and giving wife, the ultimate mother and a wonderful grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be missed by all.
Memorials are suggested to the Broken Bow Library Foundation or to the Shriners Children’s Hospital.
