Margaret Aubert

February 15, 1927 — March 7, 2016

Margaret Ruth (Sheets) Aubert was born on February 15, 1927 to George and Marguerite (Reckmeyer) Sheets. Margaret had 2 sisters, Joann and Norna. They attended rural schools in the area and had fun stories about riding her horses to school and home again after school. Margaret also spent 2 years of elementary school in Osceola, NE where she resided with her 2 aunts in town. She spent the majority of her life residing in the beautiful Sand Hills of Nebraska. She often said, “I left my heart in the Sand Hills.” Margaret attended Kearney State College and received her teaching certificate. While she was there, her mother also attended one year of summer school with her and this created many interesting memories for both of them. She taught in several rural schools in central, Nebraska. Her favorite school years were spent teaching at the Gates school where she had numerous friends in the community and maintained those friendships over the years. During her summer breaks, she worked for several ranchers in the area where she helped in moving and tending cattle. She loved any job that would allow her to spend time riding her horses. It was during one of these cattle drives that she met her future husband, John Aubert. They loved telling stories of their first date being on horseback. On March 15, 1956, Margaret and John were married in Broken Bow. This wedding date was chosen because both of their parents shared this wedding date. The Best man and Matron of Honor were Kate and Tom Loughran and this friendship continued over the years. After they were married, John and Margaret first resided in Custer County near Gates where John worked at the Poland Place while she taught at Gates. They also spent several years living in Ericson where they both worked on the Pitzer Ranch. Their free time was spent attending and participating in rodeos. Their daughter Sheila was born during this timeframe. Their next adventure was in Sargent where John was the Parts man at Peterson-Drake John Deere Shop. Margaret continued to teach at Gates for several years and was also a substitute teacher. Margaret spent her free time devoted to the raising of registered German Shepherd dogs and Appaloosa Horses. She was able to share her love of horses and children by leading a 4-H club devoted to horses. She also was pleased to sell Avon and Watkins products to her friends and neighbors as this gave her an opportunity to visit her friends and neighbors. She was active in various organizations in Sargent and Custer County, including Extension Club. Margaret spent her last few years residing in the Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City. She made numerous friends there with staff and other residents. She praised the food and all of the staff there and enjoyed the many activity options she had to choose from. Her love of reading westerns continued throughout the years as she added to her extensive collection. She also spent many hours putting together puzzles of horses, dogs and cats. Her love of Chocolate never wavered. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband John, and her parents. Margaret passed away on March 7, 2016 at Rose Lane. She is survived by her daughter Sheila Erickson and husband William Erickson who reside in Broken Bow/Sargent; her daughter Jodie Durham and husband Michael Durham who reside wherever their horses are racing including Missouri, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Illinois; 2 grandchildren, Shane Eloe who was her favorite redhead and lives in Council Bluffs IA; and Amber Mobley, her favorite blonde and her husband Vern Mobley from Callaway; great grandchildren Seth, Jadon and Delilah Eloe, Aubrey Reifenrath, Klayton Milhon and Lexi Mobley; along with her sister Joan Hale in Chickasha OK; and sister Norna Kellner who lives in Missouri. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent with Reverend Don Schauda officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Sargent. Visitation will be Friday March 11, 6 PM to 8 PM at the Rhoad Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Sargent Volunteer Fire Department.
