. Viola Mason Viola Marguerite (Young) Mason was born September 18, 1924 to Viola Belle (Gift) and Ray Howell Young at their home ¾ of a mile south of Gates and passed away May 26, 2016, at the age of 91. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday May 31st at 10:00 AM at Govier Brothers Mortuary Chapel, Broken Bow, Nebraska with Rev. Jim Koontz officiating. Burial will be in the Gates Cemetery, Gates Nebraska. Visitation will be Monday, May 30 from 8:00AM to 8:00 PM at Govier Bros. Mortuary. Govier Brothers Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Viola attended school at Gates through the 11th grade. When Gates High School closed, she then went to Broken Bow and graduated in 1943. Vi attended Kearney State College and received a 3 year teacher’s certificate. She taught in various schools in the area. On June 1, 1946, she married Donald L. Mason. She liked to tell everyone that she married the hired man because Don worked for her parents. On April 30, 1948, Judith Elaine was born. Don and Vi had been living in Broken Bow, but moved 9 miles west of Sargent to the farm that they lived on for the rest of Don’s life. Donald Bruce was born on March 24, 1953. Don passed away on June 8, 1993, and Vi moved to Broken Bow to her little house on South 8th Street that Fall. In 2010 she moved in to Custer Care 2 and at the time of her death, lived in Custer Care 1. She loved living in the two Custer Care houses and would tell that to everyone that visited her. Vi loved music. She played the piano and violin and enjoyed entertaining people with her piano playing. She was a member of the Middle Loupers Extension Club until she moved to Broken Bow. She enjoyed writing letters, reading, visiting on the phone, doing crossword puzzles, playing dominoes, putting together jigsaw puzzles and watching tv. She always wrote down what she was thinking as is evidenced by the many journals and notes she left behind. Viola is survived by Children Judith and Gale Moody of Ansley and Donald Mason and finance Carol Karre of McCook; grandchildren Jana and Lynn Henry, John Mason, Justine and Mike Thomsen, Jodine and Ken Slingsby, Shelli and Dan Delancey, Scot and Lisa Moody, Emilyn Karre, Cody and Jeanette Karre; 27 great grandchildren and 8 great, great grandchildren. Viola was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald, sister Marjorie and husband Pat Murphy.
