Verna Delores (Clay) Lewis was born on January 3. 1932 to Loren and Bertha (Hall) Clay at their sod home in Dunning, NE and passed away on November 22, 2016 at Brookestone View care center in Broken Bow. Verna attended school in Broken Bow, graduating in 1949. Soon after graduation she married Bob Lewis and spent the next twenty years traveling with him as a Navy wife.  To this union seven children were born. Near the end of Bob’s service career the family moved to their home north of Broken Bow. Verna ran the Stockman’s Café in Broken Bow for several years. After the family moved to Merna in 1978, Verna returned to school and received her LPN degree from Kearney State College.  She worked in the medical field until her retirement at age 75. Verna was such a unique and strong person.  She will be remembered for her ability to cook, (her pies were amazing) and she introduced her family to the cuisines she had experienced in her Navy travels.  Anytime Verna hosted a holiday, there was enough food to feed an army and she made sure everyone’s favorite pie was waiting for them.  Her wit always kept family gatherings light hearted and fun. She was always straight forward, maybe even a bit outspoken, and had no trouble getting her point across to those around her.  She also loved her children and grandchildren deeply, always trying to help them out.  She furnished many start up homes with the items she gathered from garage sales, and you always knew how much stuff she would send home with you was proportionate to the size of vehicle you drove. The family often referred to “shopping Verna’s” before looking in a store, because she probably had two of what you needed. Verna was preceded in death by her husband Bob and daughter Lorina Turner, her parents and sister Doris Eberle.  She is survived by her daughter  Kathy (Ken) Pomplun of Kearney and their children Kendra (Jeff) Derr , Kim (Mike) Hedstrom of Kearney and Kent Pomplun of Rapid City, SD; Son in law Jack Turner,  children Brad (Kari) Turner and Patti Turner and Greg Johnson all of North Platte, Dan (Jamie) Turner of Kearney and Amy (Josh) Allen of Stapleton; Son Terry (Jill) Lewis of Gilbert, AZ. ; daughter Jana (Bob) Myers of Curtis and their children Erin (Dave) Clark of Glenwood, IA, Ryan Myers and Jeff (Karen ) Myers both of Curtis, NE.; daughter Shauna Barker and children Dustin and Riley Kettleborough of Broken Bow; son Tony Lewis of Buloxi, MS and daughter Melissa; and son Bobby Lewis of Buloxi, MS, and her great grandchildren. A memorial has been established to the Anselmo-Merna scholarship foundation.
