Katharine A. Oxford age 90 of Broken Bow died Monday April 19, 2010 at the Callaway District Hospital in Callaway.
Funeral services will be held Thursday April 22, 2010 at 2:00 PM in Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow with Reverend Lila Picton officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Govier Bros. Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be held Wednesday 8 AM to 8 PM with the family greeting friends 6 PM to 8 PM at Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow. Memorials will be decided at a later date.
Katharine Alphretta (Gibson) Oxford was born on July 6, 1919 in Bartlett, IA to Asa Raphael and Grace Alphretta (Barnhart) Gibson.
Katharine and her family lived on the Binezer Ranch where she attended school at Fleming Valley School 1st through 8th grade. She attended school at Senate School at Ash Creek. She graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1938.
On August 3rd, 1938 she and Clarence Oxford were headed to the Custer County Fair instead, went to Taylor, NE and eloped. To this union four children were born, Gene Herbert, Orville Jerome “Jerry”, Sheridan Ione and David Raphael.
They made their home in Custer County area before retiring to Broken Bow in 1979.
Katharine worked at B-D, Joe’s Grocery, was a CNA at Callaway Nursing Home, the Weed District and the William Penn Motel.
Katharine enjoyed gardening, reading, crocheting, her grandchildren, playing the piano and jigsaw puzzles. She loved spending time with her sisters quilting.
Katharine is survived by her sons Gene and wife LaVonne Oxford of Broken Bow, Jerry Oxford of Oconto and David and wife Linda Oxford of Enders, her daughter Sheri Griffith of Broken Bow, 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother JD Gibson of Broken Bow, sister in law Charlotte Esch of Broken Bow, and brother in law Orville (Harriett) Oxford of Council Bluffs, IA.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence, her parents, a brother Bud, four sisters Lera Taylor, Elizabeth Drake, Ethel Lewis, and Blanche Ferguson. One grandson Richard Oxford, and one great grandson Zachary Heusman.
