Ruby Maxine (Hallman) Leck was born November 25, 1923 in Loup City, NE to Harry Ira Hallman and Emily Jane (Holeman) Hallman. Ruby was 86 years young when she passed away on July 1, 2010 at the Custer Care Center in Broken Bow, NE.
Ruby grew up in the Westerville Community, graduating from Westerville High School in 1941. While in high school, Ruby met a young fellow that caught her eye and affections, who later became her husband. Dale Leck and Ruby Hallman married October 10, 1942 in Loup City, NE. They began their married life in the Westerville community. While living in Westerville, Dale and Ruby were blessed with five children; Dennis Dale, Linda Lou, and Gayle Denise; infant children Joleine Ruby and Timmy Ray passed away at birth. From Westerville, the family moved to Ansley and later settled in Broken Bow.
Ruby loved her home and family very much. She enjoyed gardening, making Christmas candy, sewing, and crocheting. Ruby loved having Christmas dinner at her home and having her family gather together to celebrate, enjoy a bountiful dinner, share in laughs, and join in a game or some sort of craft project. Her family will remember the “special” Easter Egg she hid at Easter time. After Easter dinner everyone made a beeline out the front door to try and find the egg that contained a $2 bill.
Ruby had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to joke with her family and friends. She was a very hard worker and enjoyed keeping busy. She worked beside Dale in building her one and only home that they owned south of Broken Bow. She dearly loved that home. Ruby will be remembered in the community for the 35 years she worked selling fabrics. Twenty-five of those years she worked at the Ben Franklins Fabric Center in Broken Bow. She thoroughly enjoyed helping customers with their 4-H projects, prom and wedding dresses, quilts, and yarn projects. Ruby was especially honored when she received the Friends of 4-H Award in 1992. Ruby was an avid recycler way before the day when it was the“ politically correct” thing to do. Her family used to get a kick out of finding recycled aluminum foil of various sizes stashed in the oven drawer. She never liked to throw anything away that might be of use “sometime later.” She was also the connoisseur of glues. She had glue in all forms for every possible need.
Dale and Ruby celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1992. They enjoyed three more years together until Dale passed away in 1995. Ruby remained in her home south of Broken Bow until 2006 when she moved to Custer Care Center in Broken Bow.
Throughout the years, Ruby attended Westerville Methodist Church, the Church of God in Broken Bow where she was baptized, and the Weissert Church of God. She also attended the weekly bible studies at Custer Care Center.
Ruby is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Emily Hallman, parents-in-law Chester and Grace Leck, husband Dale, son Dennis, infant daughter Joleine, infant son Timmy, granddaughter Lori Miller, brother Glenn Hallman, brothers-in-law Ivan and Cleon Leck, sisters-in-law Irene Hallman and Marilyn Leck.
