Lincoln, NE- Dorothy “Dot” Yanagida age 75 of Lincoln formerly of Broken Bow died Friday July 16, 2010 at The Monarch in Lincoln, Nebraska
Dorothy “Dot” Louise Yanagida was born May 11, 1935. Her parents were Lena and Albert Schutt of Big Springs, Nebraska. Dorothy was baptized July, 1935 and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Big Springs in 1949, and graduated from Big Springs High School in 1952.
After high school, Dorothy taught in a one room country school in District #18. After two years, she attended Chadron State Teachers College. During college, Dorothy was a member of Gamma Theta Upsilon, Zeta Alpha, the Lutheran Students Association, and was selected as homecoming attendant. From there she went on to teach in North Platte, NE in 1955 and 1956, and also taught at Platte Valley School District #8, outside of North Platte.
While teaching at North Platte, she met and married her husband Roy, and have celebrated over 53 years of marriage. The marriage was blessed with three children Brent, Rodney, and LaRae.
The family moved to Broken Bow, Nebraska in 1968, where Dorothy was the comptroller and bookkeeper in her husband’s John Deere dealership. She also was employed by Corner Style Shoppe, was associated with Chard Hirsch with the Merle Norman Studio and was an employee at Holcomb Pharmacy.
Dorothy enjoyed music and often played for the local Lutheran church service while in Broken Bow. She also enjoyed dancing, playing the accordion, bowling, golfing, skiing, and enjoyed other activities in the mountains.
After her husband’s retirement from John Deere, Dorothy and Roy moved to Mesquite, Nevada and to Lincoln, where she joined her husband in many “big red” events, being especially supportive of the Nebraska football and baseball teams.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, and two step brothers, Duane and Robert Leder all of Big Springs, NE.
She is survived by her husband Roy, her son Brent and wife, Lucille of Denver, her son Rodney and wife Lisa of Lincoln, and her daughter LaRae of Lincoln. Her grandchildren are Tiffany, Ryan, Jennifer, Amy, and Nathan. She is also survived by one sister, Shirley Pierce of Higgins, Texas, an aunt Lorene Stephens and uncle Raymond Hoelscher, both from Lafe, Arkansas, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Monday July 26, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow with Reverend Bloom of Immanual Lutheran Church officiating. An Inurnment will be held in the North Platte Cemetery at North Platte, Nebraska.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Custer County Foundation, Immanual Lutheran Church in Lincoln, or the Mesquite Lutheran Church of Mesquite, NV.
