Edward John Mills was born on July 27, 1971 at Broken Bow, NE hospital to Edward Gerald and Peggy (Efurd) Mills. He was raised on a farm at rural Westerville, NE.
John was baptized and confirmed at Westerville United Methodist Church. John attended kindergarten to 8th grade at Weissert District 17 in Nebraska. John graduated from Ansley High School in 1989. He attended Platte Community College in Columbus and graduated from there in 1991. John got his start in advertising at KCNI in Broken Bow in 1988. After graduating from Platte Campus, John went to work at the Columbus Telegram. He moved up to Advertising Director before leaving The Telegram in 2001. He then worked at KLIR Radio station in Columbus as an advertising account manager and at Mike’s Auto and Towing as the Sales and Marketing Manager. Recently his dream of starting his own business and adverting marketing consulting company came true as he established Mills Marketing in June 2010. John loved living in Columbus and the many friends and clients he made there.
John was committed to his community and his friends, and as a result never said “no” when asked for help. He volunteered on numerous committees, including service to the Columbus Area United Way, Clear Lake Board, Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce, and many other professional and charitable organizations. He will be remembered for loving to entertain at his house on Clear Lake, especially the many 4th of July parties.
John was given the gift to sing and traveled with the Chorale group at Platte Campus to many states. Since that time John was asked to sing at many, many weddings which include numerous friends who considered him family. He enjoyed fishing, camping, being with friends…especially hanging out on his beach with friends.
John is survived by his mother Peggy Mills of Broken Bow, NE, sister Jane (Mills) Dolph of Wakefield, NE and her husband Kraig, nephew Joshua and niece Jamie, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father Edward Gerald, paternal grandparents Edward Weaver and Avis Mills and maternal grandparents John W. and Mary Addie Efurd.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30am at United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with burial to follow at Westerville Cemetery. A Memorial Service and Celebration of John’s life will be held Thursday at 5:30pm at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. Govier Brothers Mortuary (www.govierbrothers.com) in Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.
