Broken Bow, NE- Rex Duryea age 84 passed away October 17, 2010 at the Custer Care Center #2 in Broken Bow. Funeral services will be held Wednesday October 20, 2010 at 10:00 AM in Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow with Father Kay Knudson and Reverend Mary Jane Gockley officiating. Burial will be in the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, NE at 2:30 PM. Visitation will be held Tuesday 8 AM to 8 PM at Govier Bros. Mortuary with the family greeting friends 5 PM to 7 PM. Memorials have been established to the Custer Care Center, St. John’s Episcopal Church or the Donor’s Choice. Rex was born March 17, 1926 to Clarence and Myrtle (McClement) Duryea at Dunning, Nebraska. Rex joined the US Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served with the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific during World War II on Okinawa and Peleliu where he earned two purple hearts and numerous other decorations. On August 25, 1945 he was married to Mary Huffman and to this union three children were born. Rex worked 32 years with the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement in 1982. He is survived by his beloved wife Mary of Broken Bow, daughter Kitty Holloway of a Broken Bow, and her children Jon, Guy, and Kim; son Marion “Bud” Duryea and wife Cathy of Alamogordo, New Mexico and his children Desire’ and Rick; and son Kelly and wife Jodeen of Billings, MT and his children Jason, Tiffanie, and Brandon; and ten great grandchildren. He is also survived by brother Donald Whiteman and wife Lois of Broken Bow, sister-in-law Mabel Rodocker of Halsey, and brother-in-law Bill Huffman of Ainsworth, and special friend Nathan Avery of Kearney, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Clarence.
