Wells, Lloyd A., age 88, of Broken Bow, Nebraska, passed away on November 27, 2010 at Golden Living Center in Cozad, Nebraska. Services will be held Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the Broken Bow United Methodist Church with Pastor Todd Karges officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Custer County Veterans Office to assist local veterans. Burial will be in Custer Center Cemetery with Military Rites. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6-7. Lloyd was born September 16, 1922 to Frank and Mattie Wells. After graduating from Broken Bow High School , Lloyd lived at home in the Sandhills north of Milburn. Lloyd being one of seven children, enjoyed ranch life and their new home that his oldest brother, Woodrow, built to replace the sod house where he was born and raised. Lloyd was soon drafted into the army and received his basic training on December 8, 1943 in Camp Walters, Texas. Lloyd finished his basic training at Camp Walters and received a ten-day leave before going overseas. During his leave, Lloyd was united in marriage to Eleanor I. Link on June 20, 1944. Lloyd sailed from Camp Kilmer, New Jersey, on the Queen Elizabeth to Scotland and then boarded a troop train to South Hampton, England. Lloyd joined the Third Armored Division and served in France and Germany during World War II. Lloyd was pronounced M.I.A. from the battle at Stolberg on September 17th, 1944 in Germany. He was wounded and captured P.O.W. by the Germans. Lloyd was liberated on April 2, 1945. After several hospital visits, Lloyd was discharged from the Army July 28, 1945 and was later awarded the Purple Heart. Lloyd and Eleanor moved to Cumro where they tood time out to raise their two children, Wayne and Connie. They later moved to Broken Bow where Lloyd continued to farm and ranch. Lloyd operated his Bow Equipment business and helped Eleanor out with the furniture store in Broken Bow. Lloyd enjoyed gardening, his antique tractors, hunting, and going to auctions to add to his many collections. Due to failing health conditions, Lloyd moved to the VA in Grand Island in 2006 and later moved to the Golden Living Center in Cozad. Lloyd is survived by his son, Wayne and his wife, Willa of Taylor, Nebraska and daughter, Connie and husband, Don Wagner of Kearney, Nebraska, one sister, Rosezene and Hank Volker of Lincoln, Nebraska, four grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Mattie, his wife Eleanor, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters.
