Beverly Mae (Fink) Scheer was born in Broken Bow Nebraska on February 12, 1934 to parents Arnold and Frances (Robson) Fink of Elsmere.
Beverly grew up loving the outdoors and helping on the ranch. Her favorite horse was a gentle black and white tobiano quarter horse mare, named “Daisy Bell”. She spent many hours in the saddle and was always excited to help move cattle from the ranch on Goose Creek, to the Halsey National Forest reserve ground. There were no dull moments on this drive for Beverly with the picturesque scenery of the Sandhills, seeing new faces, the challenge of crossing both the North Loup and Middle Loup rivers and of course the ever changing weather. Beverly also told stories of completing the barn chores and having the milking done before older brother Dick had finished eating his “Wheaties” while listening to the “Jack Armstrong” radio show …and then she would laugh!
Beverly attended country school and then graduated from Broken Bow high school in 1952. While in High School Beverly enjoyed singing in the choir and also took private singing lessons. She received a teaching certificate from Kearney State College and then taught school in a one room school house on Goose Creek for a year. In 1947 Beverly’s dad, Arnold Fink, bought a Piper Cub airplane and hired a private pilot to teach him how to fly. That’s when a good looking young man, named Earl Alfred (Shorty) Scheer, flew in and landed into Beverly’s life. Beverly and Shorty made a bet over a malted milk in 1951 that Shorty would be married in two years. And about 30 days before the bet was up… Bev had stole Shorty’s heart and they were married June 14, 1953 in the Elsmere Church.
Shorty and Bev lived and raised four children on the ranch in a house that Shorty built. Beverly’s days were filled with raising kids, teaching Sunday School, Bible School, Extension Club officer, cooking for hay crews, 4-H Sewing leader, raising a huge garden and canning. Beverly was blessed with a beautiful soprano voice and had a talent for delivering a song with feeling and emotion. She sang in church, for numerous wedding and funerals; and was a member of the Elsmere Trio. This trio consisted of three good friends; Beverly, Carol Chase and Bonnie Keys. They entertained state wide with piano accompanist, Frances Fink. All us kids (Paige, Kathy, Gary, Kevin, Melanie and Bryan) knew all the songs, and parts by heart. Once at a dinner at the Purdum Church the three ladies were visiting and Gary asked “when are you going to sing…cause you’re all lined up?”
In 1970 the Scheer family moved to Ainsworth, NE. Beverly occupied her time by chasing kids, joining the Zion Lutheran Church and being involved in every aspect of the church. She stayed close to her Elsmere friends by forming the Elsmere Card club. Her home was always a hub of activity where neighbor kids gathered and there was always room for extras at meal time. Beverly was a great cook and baker which lead her to cook for “Morrows Drive-In”, and also helped friend Carolyn Chase start the lunch program at the Ainsworth City Schools. She then took over this program and made it self-sustaining and acquired a college certification in health and food handling. Bev retired from the school in the 1990s. She never missed a rodeo and rode shot gun to the arena no matter what state! Bev had food prepared from the four main food groups packed, including table ware and drinks, plus never left the house without homemade cookies! Bev could always be seen at every football game, wrestling meet, basketball and volleyball game that we kids played in and most of the grandkid’s games and rodeos as well. (She definitely should have held the title of No 1 Fan.) Bev helped plan weddings, decorated and prepared banquets for FFA, Prom, senior breakfasts and concession stands. She hosted many special meals for family and friends over the years. Bev instilled holiday traditions with love and added her special touch, which has been passed on and are used still today! Husker volleyball (Go Big Red!!), “The Lawrence Welk Show”, “Hee Haw” and Grandson Cort riding saddle broncos, were her favorite TV shows. And she always left a light on in the kitchen for Shorty to return home from school bus trips and from trucking or if she knew company was on the way.
Shorty passed away with Beverly by his side in 2005.
In 2010 Beverly decided to move into assisted living at Cottonwood Vila in Ainsworth, NE. She handled this move with dignity and grace; it was there that she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Her room was always a gathering place where she would treat guests to carry in pizza at her kitchen table served on her own dishes. She loved giving her great grandchildren rides on her pink walker and joining in on all the activities that Cottonwood Villa offered!
In 2017, at the young age of 83 Beverly cut a CD with son Gary, daughter Melanie and friends. She is featured on the CD signing “God Bless America” and harmonizing with Mel.
After a stroke in 2019 she moved into Quality Senior Villages and then to Custer Care in 2024, both of which are located in Broken Bow, NE and then on Hospice with Valley County Services. All of these facilities and services have very qualified caring and loving staff and we as a family hold each and every care giver a special place in our hearts. Thank you.
Beverly knows that we are saved by God’s grace and that Jesus was sent to bare our sins. That Jesus died and rose from the dead to forgive all who sin. She knows that the Holy Spirit creates faith through God’s word and sacraments. And that there is a place in heaven for us because of God’s promise!
God blessed her with a beaming smile and a lovely personality and she shared kisses daily. Music was the tie, when the Alzheimer’s advanced, and took the conversation away…thank you God!
Remember to take time to say, “I love you” and cherish the memories!
Beverly passed away the morning of Oct 25 at Custer Care Center, Broken Bow NE.
I have no doubt that Dad (Shorty) and Seth met her at the gates of heaven. “I love you Mom and will miss you… but I cannot wish you back.” “Your mind is untangled and you are made anew!” I thank God for the privilege of choosing Bev to be my mom and I hope I grow up to be just like her.
