The family moved back to Nebraska when Dale was a young child. They ranched north of Burwell where Dale attended Rosehill Country School and spent many hours working with cattle, horses, and working on the ranch. He attended Burwell High School, graduating with the class of 1947. He joined the United States Navy and served in the Korean Conflict as a damage controlman second-class on the Destroyer USS John W. Thomasen DD-760. During his service, he sailed to numerous ports of call in the Far East. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and remained proud of his service to his country. While docked at Vallejo, California, he met Carroll Kruschwitz. The couple was married at the Burwell Methodist Church on August 14, 1955. To this union were born five lovely daughters: Cathleen Dianne, Lori Elizabeth, Julie Mae, Mary Frances, and Linda Carroll. Dale farmed and ranched on the Calamus River for over 50 years. Having no sons, he taught all of his daughters to work beside him on the farm. This included hauling irrigation pipe, driving farm machinery, and working cattle on horseback. He was trained as a technician in artificial insemination and at times worked for the Burwell Veterinary Clinic, which included helping at the Burwell Rodeo. He also raised and sold Charolais bulls for several years before retiring from farming. Dale was a long-time member of the Farm Bureau, serving for a period as president. He was honored with a conservation award because of his efforts in protecting the land. Dale was a very active member of the Methodist Church, he and his whole family attending faithfully. He was active in the local Gideon camp and for years was a part of the neighborhood Bible study. His family and friends will forever remember him, as a kind and gentle man with a wry sense of humor that often led to pranks. Dale is survived by his wife Carroll of Grand Island, daughters; Cathy (Doug) Saner of Broken Bow, NE, Lori (Jim) Parrish of Bellevue, NE, Julie (Lori) Clark of Freemont, NE, Mary (Shane) Parsley of Golden, CO, Linda (Mark) Klone of Sharpsburg, GA, 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, a brother, Keith (Margaret) Harrod of Burwell, and a brother-in-law, Stan (Lois) Kruschwitz of Boulder, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Bob Hopkins.
