Daniel Lee Hickman of Honolulu, Hawaii, formerly of Merna, NE died Sept. 16, 2017 . A funeral mass and celebration of Dan's life was held on Oct. 13, 2017 at the Benedictine Monastery of Mary, Spouse of the Holy Spirit on Oahu with Father David Barfnecht officiating. Memorial graveside funeral services and inurnment will be Friday Nov. 17th at 10:30 AM in the Dale Catholic Cemetery west of Merna, NE with Father Jim Hunt officiating. Govier Brothers Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Anselmo-Merna Altar Society or the Dale Catholic Cemetery. Dan was born on Feb. 23, 1952 in Loup City, NE. to Leo and Winifred Hickman. He had six brothers and four sisters who lived with him and his parents on the Hickman family farm in Custer County. The farm had been homesteaded by his great grandparents in the 1800's. Dan attended Anselmo-Merna Public schools and graduated in 1970. He attended two years at University of Nebraska at Kearney. Dan spent many years of his adult life in other places including: Michigan, Washington DC, Albuquerque, and Denver where he continued to pursue a career as a professional photographer. Dan moved to Oahu in 2004 where he continued to pursue photography in a setting of his dreams: the Pacific Ocean surrounding the island of Oahu with mountainous terrain and plant life everywhere. When first arriving in Hawaii, he lived with his sister Bernadine and her family and eventually moved to reside in Honolulu. He continued his work in photography but also drove tour buses and enjoyed showing visitors the beauty of Hawaii. He learned some Japanese and delighted in telling his Japanese tourists on the bus more about the island over the tour bus microphone. He spent many gatherings and retreats at the Benedictine Monastery on the island where he found many solid connections and friends. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Winifred and Leo, infant brother, Bernard, older brother, Jimmy, all of Merna; sisters -Winnie Ann ( Giles) Desmond of Avon, CT, Jo Marie (Barry) Wiederholt of Denver, CO, step-mother Shirley Hickman of Broken Bow, NE. He is survived by his brothers; Raymond of Sequim, WA., Donald ( Pat) of Louisville, NE., William (Joan) of Alpharetta, GA., Richard (Teresa) of Papillion, NE., and Michael (Ann) of Merna, NE.; sisters: Bernadine (Rudy) Zimbra of Kaneohe, HI; Kathy (Fred) Govier of Mercer Island, WA.; brothers-in-law Giles (Gail) Desmond of Weatogue, CT; Barry (Verlyn) Wiederholt of Steamboat Springs, CO, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins. and friends.
