Hastings resident Darrel Ellingson, 75, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings, NE.
Darrel was born Aug. 16, 1948, in Broken Bow to Fred and Norma (Johnson) Ellingson. He graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1966 and attended college. Darrel served in the Nebraska Army National Guard.
He married his high school sweetheart, Karilyn Grim, on Aug. 8, 1966, in Julesburg, CO. They were married for 57 years. They lived in Grand Island and Hastings and, for a short time, in Clear Lake, Iowa.
Darrel worked as a postman for the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years; he was a friend to everyone on his route. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Postal Union. Darrel enjoyed golfing, computer football league, RC airplanes and trains and watching Nebraska football. He enjoyed spending his spare time on the farm in Berwyn.
Darrel loved getting on his computer, doing jigsaw puzzles on his tablet, watching movies and spending time with Karilyn.
Darrel was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife Karilyn Ellingson; children Douglas Ellingson, Jeffrey (Kristie) Ellingson and Kevin Ellingson; grandchildren Sadie Ellingson and Maegan (Creighton) Brei; great-grandchildren Walker Patterson, Daekyn Brei and Briella Brei; and brother Dennis (Debra) Ellingson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 10, at Govier Brothers Funeral Home in Broken Bow with Pastor George Kilmer officiating. Burial will be at Broken Bow Cemetery in Broken Bow. Online condolences may be left at www.govierbrothers.com
Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. with family present 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.lbvfh.com. Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center is serving the family. Memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date.
