Obituary for Dorothy Lee Lewis Dorothy Lee  Lewis, age 91, died Saturday, February 24, 2018, at Phelps Memorial Health Center, Holdrege. Funeral services will be at Rhoad Funeral Home, Sargent, Nebraska, on Saturday, March 3, 1:oo p.m., with Chaplain Kathy Doiel officiating. Govier Brothers Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.  Dorothy was born at home northeast of Sargent, Nebraska, to Esther Ethel (Oberg) and Lee Mohr Penny on September 28, 1926. Dorothy's mother died in June, 1928, following the birth of Dorothy's brother, Windsor. The two children were raised by their grandparents, Sam and Mattie (Mohr) Penny.  They lived in Denver, Colorado, for a few years, and moved to Kearney, Nebraska, for the children's schooling, where Dorothy graduated from Kearney High School with the class of 1943. They also had a home in Sargent, where her father farmed, and had hogs and cattle. Following high school, she attended Loretto Heights College in Denver, majoring in organ and voice, graduating in 1947, at the age of 20. She moved back  to Sargent, and gave piano and organ lessons, until the school asked her to teach during WWII. She married Harold B. Pointer on March 1, 1949. They had three children, Loyd Lee, Rhonda Sue and Ward J. She played the organ in the Sargent Methodist Church for over 30 years, and gave piano lessons. She also earned an elementary teaching degree and taught kindergarten and head start in Sargent, and all grade school children at Round Valley. In 1981, she married Reverend Leslie E. Lewis. They lived in Sargent, Ewing and Amherst, NE, where he preached in the respective United Methodist Churches. Following his death, she moved to Kearney. In 2014, she moved to assisted living at Holdrege Memorial Homes. Dorothy was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She was active in many organizations, including PEO International where she was a member for over 70 years, Daughters of the American Revolution, Red Cross Bloodmobile, both volunteering and donating many gallons. She had several hobbies, including reading, music, knitting, crochet, sewing, cooking, canning, and gardening. She was an avid educator, teaching music lessons, and many Sunday School classes. She taught many people how to crochet and knit through classes with local community colleges. Dorothy is survived by her children, Loyd and Rhonda Pointer, Sargent, NE; Rhonda and Roger Johnson, Holdrege, NE; and Ward and Elvira Pointer, Fresno, CA. Grandchildren, Amy and Kyler Haines, Highlands Ranch, CO; Leslie Johnson and Jim Heckman, Highlands Ranch, CO; Samantha Pointer and Steffan Dueling, Portland, OR; Cristian, Garrett and Riley Pointer, Fresno CA; and two great-grand sons, Jace and Cole Haines, Highlands Ranch, CO. She was preceded in death by both husbands, her brother, Windsor Penny and his wife Janis, her parents, and her stepmother, Mary (Smith) Penny. Memorials will be given to the United Methodist Church, Sargent.
