Elsie "Evelyn" Higgins

Arnold, NE-Elsie “Evelyn” Higgins age 86, of Arnold, passed away January 12, 2020 at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Elsie “Evelyn” Higgins was born on October 19, 1933 at Ainsworth, NE to Joe and Josephine (Hoogland) Reed.  She attended school in Ainsworth and graduated from Ainsworth High School.  Evelyn then attended and graduated from the Methodist Hospital Nursing Program.  She moved to Arnold and worked at the Arnold Hospital.  In 1956 she was married to Jay Higgins of Arnold.  Evelyn continued to work at the Arnold Hospital until it closed.  Evelyn later went to work in Callaway at the Callaway District Hospital.  She worked in Callaway for almost 25 years.  She retired when Jay’s health required more care.

Evelyn was always taking care of someone or something.  Caring for people in the hospital as a nurse, feeding the animals and birds every day, and raising orchids.  She raised Orchids for more than 20 years.  Evelyn had so many that she would give the plants names. 

Evelyn is survived by her children, Becky (Terry) Trentman of St. Libory, Corey (Carol) Higgins of Gilbert, AZ, and Jackie Houser of Ansley; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a sister Doris Lucas of Phoenix, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jay, and sisters, Dorothy and Mary Alice.
