Eugenia "Jean" Hovie

May 12, 1922 — January 21, 2018

Grand Island, NE-  Eugenia Ann “Jean” Hovie died January 21, 2018 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Eugenia was born on May 12, 1922 at Loup City, NE to Frank and Anna (Maciejewski) Janulewicz.  At the age of six, Jean’s family moved to a farm eight miles southwest of Comstock.  Jean spent eight years attending the Spring Creek School. She attended High School in Comstock.  She married Wendell Hovie in January 1940. In May of 1940 Wendell and Jean moved with Wendell's mother and three sisters to Santa Monica, CA.  Four children were born to this union; Norma, Glenn, Bruce and John. In 1947 the family returned to Comstock.  Jean worked in Copps Grocery Store for 3 years and then the Farmers and Merchant Bank for 8 years.  Wendell and Jean later moved to Kearney where Wendell was employed at the Post Office.  During this time, Jean worked at the Platte Valley Bank.  Jean also proudly earned her GED while she and Wendell lived in Kearney.  In 1973, Wendell and Jean returned to their home in Comstock.   Jean was a charter member of the Helpful Homemakers Club.  She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary #1947. Jean and Wendell loved to travel, fish, dance, cook and garden.  Above all else, Jean and Wendell loved their family.   Mr. Hovie passed away on August 16, 2006.  Jean moved to Grand Island in April of 2007. She is survived by her daughter Norma Darnall of Farnam; sons; Glenn Hovie of Kearney, Bruce Hovie of North Platte and John Hovie of Grand Island, 11 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 3 great, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother and three sisters. She will forever be remembered for her smile, her unending love for her family and baking the most delicious kolaches.   Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 27, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with Pastor Bill Williams officiating.  Burial will be in the Douglas Grove Cemetery at Comstock following the funeral service.  A visitation will be held on Friday 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
