Gary Winchester age 90 of Anselmo, NE passed away January 16, 2023, at Jennie M Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow, NE.
Services will be Monday January 23, 2023, at 2:00 pm at the St. Anselm’s Catholic Church in Anselmo, NE with Father Jim Hunt officiating. Burial will be in the St. Anselm’s Catholic Cemetery at Anselmo with Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to Anselmo Fire Department, Anselmo/Merna Rescue, or St. Anselm’s Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Sunday January 22, 2023 at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM with the family greeting friends 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Govier Brothers Mortuary are in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be left at www.govierbrothers.com.
Gerald “Gary” Keith Winchester grew upon the family ranch in rural Custer County near Anselmo, NE. He attended a country school (Hoosier) and graduated from Anselmo High School in 1950. He then attended Kearney State College for Pre-Veterinary for two years. Life changed when he was drafted into the United States Army. He was sent to Fort Chaffee Maneuver Training Center in Fort Smith, AR. He had medical training at Brooks Army Medical in San Antonia for two months. From there he was sent to Fort Lewis, WA to be shipped out for Korea. His duty was with the 52nd Field Artillery Battalion of the 24th Armor Division as a field medic on the DMZ zone.
Gary enjoyed ranching, hunting, and fishing with his family and friends. Sunday afternoons were special because his brother Wendell and two friends belonged to a Saddle Club and would compete with other Saddle Clubs in Custer County.
After returning home from Korea, he met Patricia “Patty” Spanel. They were married on December 29, 1958. Three children were born to this union: Scott, Gail, and Ron.
Gary is survived by his wife Patty, children: Scott of Anselmo, Gail (Reed) Keech of Denton, and Ron (LeaAnn) of Merna, grandchildren: Ryan, Austin, Nick, Dallas, step grand children: Wayne and Alicia Ritchie, son Lennon, Kayla (Cole) Geiser, sons Brody, Bentley, Breckon, and Ryan (Jen) Halouska.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents William and Ruth Winchester, brother Wendell, nephews Dan and Willy.
