Mullen, NE – Hazelle M. Finney age 103 of Mullen formerly of Seneca, died November 4, 2019, at the Pioneer Memorial Care Home in Mullen.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019 at 11:00 AM (Central Time) at the United Church of Christ in Thedford with Pastor Les Parmenter officiating. Interment will be at the Seneca Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday evening 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM (MDT) at the Mullen Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Thedford Rescue Unit or the United Church of Christ in Thedford. Mullen Funeral Home/Govier Brothers Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements. Hazelle was born at Grayson, NE on the Beguin family homestead, south of Rushville, NE May 18, 1916, to Fred and Pauline (Nicolet) Beguin. Hazelle went to a country school through the 9th grade. She then attended Chadron College Prep School for two years. She graduated from Rushville High School in 1934, during the Great Depression. She worked for her parents for one year and then attended Chadron college for one year, where she received a certificate which allowed her to teach in a rural school for three years, which she did. She rode horseback several miles, every day to teach. She then went back to Chadron to college and in 1942 Hazelle received her Bachelor of Art Degree.
On August 17, 1942 Hazelle married Hubert Frank Finney at Chadron, NE at the Congregational minister’s home, where several members of her family were also married. To this union two sons were born John Michael and Joe Emmet. They were married over 62 years, when Hubert passed away on October 28, 2004.
Education and community were very important to Hazelle. She served on the board for Educational Service Unit #16, in its beginning. She served on this board for 10 years. She was on the Thomas County Library board for 15 years. Hazelle was a member of the Cattlewomen, the Thomas County Historical Society, the Federated Women’s Club, a charter member of the VFW Auxiliary #2023 of Seneca, the American Legion Steidly Kayton #230 Auxiliary of Thedford, a Doe of the Elks Lodge #1688 at Broken Bow.
Hazelle grew up in a Christian home, but because of distance, she didn’t attend church until she went to high school at which time, she attended the Congregational Church. She joined the Congregational Church at Seneca, where she also taught Sunday School. Later she transferred her membership to the Thedford Congregational Church.
She will be greatly missed by, her son’s Mike (Janel) of Seneca, Joe (Diane) of Overbrook, KS, grandchildren Tracy (Ethan) Mann, Wade (Jillian) Finney, Aaron (Mollie) Finney, step-grandsons Dean (Jane) Young, Robin (Allison) Young, Tyler Kruse, step granddaughters Dawn (Tim) Stoezel, Leslie (Brandon) Fries, 17 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Her friendship and care will be missed by her many friends and neighbors.
She has joined in Heaven, her husband Hurbert, her parents, two brothers Albert and Henry, foster brother Marvin Pochon, four sisters Lucy Svevad, Florence Danekas, Hallie Jackson, Doris Holcroft, and infant sister Olga Beguin.
