Broken Bow, NE – Jon Brestel age 65 years and 11 months, of Broken Bow, passed away on October 30, 2018, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow, after a courageous 6-year battle with Cancer.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at 10:30 AM at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with Gary Morgan officiating. Inurnment with Military Honors will be held at the Broken Bow Cemetery. A visitation with family greeting friends will be held on Friday, November 2, 2018, 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Govier Brothers. Memorials are suggested to the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Jon was born November 30, 1952, in Callaway, Nebraska to Eugene and Mary Jane Brestel. He was the middle child of three. After a brief time in which the family lived in Spokane, Washington, Jon grew upon the farm 3 ½ miles northeast of Callaway. There he attended Callaway Public Schools where he was involved in football, track, and his lifelong love baseball. He graduated in 1971 and attended Chadron State College for one year before enlisting in the United States Army. Following his discharge in 1975, he attended Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. After a year he relocated to Tucson and attended the University of Arizona and Durham University Business School.
It was in Tucson that he met and married Maria Campbell in 1977, and four children were born to this union. Following their divorce in 1990, Jon returned to Nebraska locating in Broken Bow. There he met and married Sherry Baker Anderson on February 23, 1992.
Jon was a Retail Store Manager for Arrow Seed Company and later assistant store manager for Orscheln Farm and Home until his retirement in 2012.
He and Sherry enjoyed Square Dancing for many years. His main passion was woodworking having made most of the furniture in their home. He was best known for his complex scroll saw projects.
Jon is survived by wife Sherry, children Tim (Melissa) Brestel of Omaha, Bethany (Brock) Schultz and children Fiona and Leo of Madison, Wisconsin, Amanda (Ryan) Shoemaker of Arizona and Ryan (Amber) Brestel of Wisconsin, sister Jackie Bailey of Waldorf, Maryland, brother Tom (Cindi) Brestel, nieces Megan (Josh) Burkle and family and Emily Brestel.
Jon is preceded in death by parents Eugene and Mary Jane, brother-in-law William Bailey, uncles Bill Lichtenberger and Robert Brestel.
