Marion Catherine Mohr – My Life Story I was born Marion Catherine Mohr on August 25, 1924, in a rented farm home northeast of Stratton, NE, which at that time was called “The Haas Place” and lived there my first year and half of life. My parents Junior and Freda Reed were able to purchase their own land north of there in 1925 and moved me to the place I would call my home for the rest of my life. As an only child, I enjoyed time with my Grandmothers. My Mother’s mother was a dressmaker and shared her knowledge with me, which I used throughout my life to make beautiful clothing for my family. My Dad’s mother was a storyteller. She told me about her growing up in New York State, Michigan and finally SW Nebraska. The memories she shared, made me cherish family history and inspired me to share my own. I went to a one-room- country school through 8th grade. On Friday’s we had art class. This is where my interest and talents were encouraged. I learned about drawing and watercolors and enjoyed creating. Throughout the years I loved to make greeting cards to share with family and friends. My education continued at Stratton High School, where I took Normal Training. Passing this course allowed me to teach in rural schools. During the war years, I taught in a one-room schoolhouse South of Palisade. I walked a couple of miles to and from work until extended family saw me and gave me a bicycle! This would cut my time down by half… but first I had to learn how to ride it. I pushed on and furthered my education at Kearney State Teachers College and Greeley, Colorado State College. After graduation I was hired to teach the lower grades ( my favorites!) in Grant, NE, Wray, CO, and Minden, NE. Teaching extended throughout my life as I shared the good news with young children and preschoolers in Sunday School at the Methodist Church. A wonderful time in my life began when I married John Mohr on June 8th, 1954. We moved to Sidney, NE where John was employed as a delivery route driver for the Debus Bread Company. Our three sons, Cort, Clay, and Gene were born there. But “city” life was not our love, so we returned to “the home place” in 1960 to raise our family, buy the farm, and raise crops, kids, and animals. There was never a dull moment. Karla, our daughter joined the clan later in my life becoming the youngest of grandchildren on the Mohr side following 8 grandsons. She added joy and fun to our lives. Reading back over family history I realized an interesting fact. My parents lived on the family farm for 34 years and so did John and I. The farm is still in the family and I hope it will remain that way. My life has been a happy one. I’ve been blessed with wonderful children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I’ve known sorrow with the loss of my parents, John and a daughter-in-law, Tammy. But with a strong belief in God, a deep faith, and great people around you, You can do all things With Christ who strengthens you Philippians 4-13
