Richard Sands

Richard Sands age 72 of Broken Bow, NE passed away on January 17, 2024, at the UNMC in Omaha, NE.

Graveside Services will be Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Broken Bow Cemetery in Broken Bow, NE with Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Veteran’s Memorial Building in Broken Bow. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 23^rd from 1:00 to 5:00 pm at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. Richard Burton Sands was born November 6, 1951, in Canon City, Colorado to Logan and Clara (Johnson) Sands. His parents divorced at a young age, his mother remarried and moved to San Diego, CA.

After graduating from San Diego High School, Richard entered active duty in the Air Force on March 4, 1971, and was honorable discharged on March 31, 1991. Richard served our country for over 20 years.

Richard married Eva McCray, to this union two children an adopted daughter Tarry Sands, and a son Josh Sands. The couple later divorced. On May 1, 1999, Richard was united in marriage to Bonnie Haynes-Barrow.  The couple made their home in Broken Bow.

Richard worked at Becton Dickinson for 13 years before retiring in 2016. Richard enjoyed his hobbies of playing the guitar, football, electronics, and playing video games with the grandchildren.

Richard is survived by his wife Bonnie, daughter Terri Sands, son Josh (Susan) Sands, stepdaughter Paula (James) Hakes, stepson Tim (Andrea) Barrow, ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, his mother Clara Sands of Jet, OK, brothers Robert Sands of Jet, OK, Jim Sands of Enid, OK, Larry Sands of Arkansas, David Sands of Jet, OK, and Greg Sands of Georgia, and a sister Tina Etter of Jet, OK, and two half-sisters Debbie Holt and Jill Sands of CO.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, stepdad, and stepmother.
