Yvonne Marie Giles Cox passed away Saturday, October 11, 2024, at the Callaway Good Life Center, surrounded by her loving family.
Yvonne was born June 25, 1938, to Everett and Ida Giles. She grew up on the Giles Ranch near Elsmere. She attended elementary schools in the Elsmere and Cottonwood areas on Goosecreek, she graduated from Halsey High School.
June 10, 1956, she married the love of her life Robert “Bob” Cox. They were married at the Purdum United Church of Christ. They remained members and she served as church treasurer for many years.
Yvonne loved to cook and was known to have passed on many family food traditions such as homemade chicken and noodles.
Yvonne was a 4-H leader, a member of the Purdum UCC Women’s Fellowship, and Halsey Purdum Service Club. She worked at the Halsey Superette & 4-H Camp, until taking the bookkeeping position at Harsh Mercantile in Purdum. She retired after 30-plus years at the Mercantile.
Aunt Vonnie’s house was a favorite of her nieces and nephews.
Yvonne (Grandma Yo) is survived by her husband Bob (Grandpa Bob). Daughter Kylene and husband Francis Schroer of Grand Island, NE. Son Kim and wife Jean Cox of Purdum, NE. Son Byron and wife Connie of Purdum, NE. Grandchildren - Heather and Joe Bornemeier, children Layton and Brady of Elmwood, NE. Emily and Justin Bomar, children Lincoln and Brooks of Hebron, NE. Garrett and April Schroer of Lawrence, NE. Whitney and Adam Miller, children Dean and Creed of Grand Island, NE. Carl and Ashley Mehaffie, children Cora and Kade of Wellington, CO. Tyson, and Rachel Cox, children Kyle and Kallan of Purdum, NE. Trevor, Cacee Cox, and children McCall and Cutler of Scott City, KS. Bobbi and Trent Zimmerman, children Rana, Clyde, and Wiley of Purdum, NE. Sister Barbara, husband Myron Nilson, Vicky Terwilleger, and sister-in-law Ardis Giles.
Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Ida, and stepfather Russell Jennings. In-laws Kyle and Edith Cox. Brothers Kenneth and Alfred “Craig” Giles, and sister Patty Ann. Sisters and brothers-in-law Gene and Eleanor Horst, Lela Mae and LeRoy Lore, Cleo Terwilleger. Nieces Camilla Giles and Peggy Viehman. Great grandsons Carson and Rory Bomar.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Purdum United Church of Christ in Purdum, NE. Memorials are suggested to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
